Hello friends and fellow anglers!
As a partner and owner in HighRoller, my job
(of many) is to locate new and exciting
fishing trips that we can share with friends and fellow anglers.
Well... it's a tough job, but somebody has
to do it!!! I have to check out the destinations we offer first,
you know!?!
So, I took a short trip with some friends to Quepos, Costa Rica
last week to experience for myself that part of the world.
My good friend of 30 years, Buddy Nappy, who
owns a 36' Hatteras in Quepos, invited me, my friend Dave Sutton
(Chevy Fishing Report with Rick Murphy) of Miami, and Jonathan
Hill, our cameraman, to spend 2 days fishing on his boat.
After landing in San Jose, I was reminded of
my trips to the Amazon jungles in Brazil fishing for peacock
bass. As in Brazil, the
people of this peaceful country are
warm, friendly and eager to service you in any way that will
make you happy.
Spending the night in San Jose was worth the
trip alone, with many restaurants serving fabulous food, casinos
for the risk takers, and bustling nightlife. We spent the night
at the Best Western and
Casino, and retired early in preparation for an early morning
flight to Quepos.
Nature Air offers a 20 minute flight over the
mountains to Quepos and the crew and plane were suberb, the flight
was beautiful.
Quepos is a small town situated on the Pacific
coast of Costa Rica which adjoins the Manual Antonio National
Park. This park offers eco-tours, horse back riding, zip line
cable rides through the jungle, ATV rides and Jet Ski safaris.
I would have liked to take some tours, but the time only allowed
us to fish. The peak fishing time, by the way, is November-April,
so we were fishing against the odds during the off-season. BUT
WE WERE NOT disappointed!!!!
Since we were in the off season, our first day
of fishing took us offshore approximately 32 miles. Off season
normally brings up 5-10 sailfish.
During peak season, the fish are closer to shore 12 miles or
so. Peak season normally brings up 15-25 sailfish.
Our first day out we brought up 7 sailfish, hooked up 3 of the
7, and landed one nice sailfish.
Then, we came across two HUGE logs floating
about 100 years from each other that held parrot fish, triple
tails and dorado!!! Out came the light tackle, and it was on!
After an hour or so, we had landed 6 nice size triple tails and
3 dorado-SUPPER!!!
That's exactly what it was!!! The first mate, "Memo",
filleted the fish and later that evening we were treated to Quepos
hospitality at one of the local restaurants. We provided the
fish... they provided the rice, the vegetables, the fixing's,
the drinks and we chowed down for an awesome meal of fresh ocean
delicacy.
The
next day, we headed south hugging the beautiful coastline for
about 15 miles to do some inshore fishing. We hooked up 3 big
ROOSTER FISH, landing one. And also a nice Cubera Supper,
I MEAN
SNAPPER, although that is what this fish was destined to be!!!
We ate snapper cooked three different ways,
and one was as good as the next. Thank you Justin, for that absolutely
fabulous snapper-supper!!!
We scrutinize the fishing trips we offer very careful. We only
offer what we feel is the "best of the best". This
trip easily falls into that category!!!
We look at the fishing, the safety for our clients,
the accommodations, the boat and crew, the food, the infrastructure,
the transportation, scenery, and the ambienance.
We
score 1-10, 10 being the best.
Here is how it scored out:
FISHING: 10
SAFETY: 9
ACCOMMODATIONS: 10
BOAT & CREW: 10
FOOD: 9
INFRASTRUCTURE : 7
TRANSPORTATION: 10
SCENERY: 10
AMBIENT: 11
This is a trip that everyone should experience
